Instructional Research Group is a small educational research institute located in the town of Signal Hill in Long Beach, California. IRG conducts rigorous research on instruction and professional development, with a particular focus on improving the quality of instruction to students with disabilities and students who are English-language learners. IRG also develop and evaluate curricula and professional development materials. The Institute of Educational Sciences (IES) of the U. S. Department of Education currently sponsors their research. Much of the work of the institute involves the conduct of large scale randomized controlled trials in cities such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia
IRG is a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 corporation with an independent Board of Directors consisting of distinguished researchers, leaders in the field of special education, veteran special education, and administrators. Current staff includes five doctoral level researcher scientists, six research assistants who work in the area of classroom observation and assessment, and fiscal and administrative staff.
In its brief 4-year history, the institute has been involved in several major national and state initiatives in the fields of special education, the education of English language learners, and mathematics. Articles from researchers appear in major journals in the field of educational research.
