Center on Instruction (COI): Mathematics
Part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Comprehensive Center network, the Center on Instruction is one of the five content centers serving as resources for the 16 regional U.S. Department of Education Comprehensive Centers. In order to build the capacity of the regional Comprehensive Centers to meet state and local instructional needs, improve the overall quality of teaching and learning, and promote the understanding and use of evidence based instruction, the Center on Instruction is devoted to the primacy of instruction in school improvement. Information is offered on NCLB and best practices in reading, math, science, Special Education, and English Language Learner (ELL) instruction; syntheses of recent scientific research on instruction; and opportunities for professional development.
Russell Gersten of RG Research Group is directing the mathematics strand of the Center on Instruction. Work objectives include:
1) Synthesis of available evidence-based research on instruction so that the CCs have access to the most current findings on instruction.
2) Translation of the existing research knowledge on instruction into usable products that the CCs can offer state and local policy makers and educators.
3) The benchmark and identification of exemplary instances of high-quality implementation of evidence-based practices with diverse students so that the CCs can present compelling models of rigorous, effective instruction
4) To serve as a conduit of information about NCLB, scientifically based research, and effective practice that the Regional Comprehensive Centers can use with their state clients.
5) To offer the Regional Comprehensive Centers high quality professional development opportunities.
